COMPANY HISTORY

Sta. Monica Freight Service (SMFS) was established in 1977. Mr. & Mrs. Antonio “Tony” S. De Guzman started its humble operations by acquiring two units of second hand trucks, which were reconditioned by Mr. de Guzman, an engineering undergraduate. Both hard workers, Mr. & Mrs. De Guzman managed the business employing only drivers and helpers for each truck. The first cargoes were coconut meat “copra” in sacks, which were delivered to Philippine Refining Company (Unilever, Phils), and Procter & Gamble Philippines. In 1980’s, the trend of shipment and handling of cargoes transformed from loose into containerized. The company was then able to penetrate into door to door service. SMFS then began gradually expanding its fleet. The company acquired repossessed and reconditioned trucks with the assistance of financial institutions (Family Savings Bank, Filipino Financial, and Cebu International Finance Corporation), who believe in the firm’s ability to settle its commitments. Subsequently, the company served door to door and pier to pier shipments of William Lines Inc, some of which are;

Coca-Cola, Pilipinas Shell, Caltex, Petron, Del Monte, Universal Robina Corporation, San Miguel Corporation, Philippine Refining Company, Republic Biscuit Corporation, Alaska Trading, Steniel Paper Manufacturing Corporation, among others. With good relationship with the clients and quality service, SMFS continued to offer its service to a diverse
assortment of customers.

By 1990’s the company has remarkably improved. From employing 4 people in 1977, the company has then employed more than one hundred people, from truck drivers to office personnel. In 1991, William Lines, Inc, the company’s major client has merged with two other shipping companies (Aboitiz Shipping and Go Thong Shipping), thus, bearing a new name of WG&A, Inc. By this merging of 3 big shipping lines, more opportunities had been opened for SMFSI. In July 8, 1994, SMFS revolutionized from a single proprietorship into a family corporation, acquiring a new business name of Sta. Monica Freight Service, Incorporated (SMFS). The Presidency of which is being handled by Mr. Antonio S. De Guzman. By Mid-2000’s, the second generation is gradually taking over the management. With the guidance of the founders, the second generation is continuing to provide and improve the quality service SMFS offers. The successful continuous operation of SMFS is due to the high standards that have been firmly established. Basing everything we do on these matters has helped us to develop an industry-wide reputation for excellence.
